  1. Hannah B.

This book provided exactly what I was looking for: an American history outline divided into units with suggestions for good literature, games, activities, and recipes. My children and I have not finished the course yet, as I decided to stretch it out over 2 years of study. However, we are halfway through and it is working wonderfully. We are enjoying digging into the past through awesome picture books and chapter book selections instead of focusing on one textbook. The suggested games, activities, and recipes are perfect for adding a hands-on element to the course, as well as making our history study more memorable and relatable. I like that this book provides a strong framework, yet allows for creativity within each family. For example, I have used many of the suggested books, but have also added others on my own. There is no rigidity to this course which I appreciate so much. We can spend as long or as little on each unit as we would like. This course could easily be completed in one year, however, it could be stretched out to two like we are doing. I like to add in YouTube videos, historic site visits, board games, and anything else I can find that might go with each unit that we are doing.
I would say this course would be the best fit for someone looking for a more Charlotte Mason based approach, as it uses good literature and allows for elements like narration and timeline work. It is also an extremely flexible course, making it a great fit for families who do not like scripted texts and rigidity, but prefer to create something more on their own.
I am most thankful to have found this course and am hopeful that Common Sense Press will look into making a world history version in the future.
