Description

The Yellow Book – 3rd Grade Skills is a comprehensive 3rd grade language arts curriculum designed to engage children with 36 weekly lessons.

These lessons include dictation or copying literature passages from beloved books like The Tale of Benjamin Bunny (Beatrix Potter), Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (Lewis Carroll), and The Tale of Jeremy Vole (Stephen Lawhead), as well as poetry selections and more.

The updated third edition makes learning easier with new lessons, journaling, and an all-inclusive format covering essential 3rd grade language skills such as reading, a 3rd grade spelling list (suggested lists included), grammar, higher-order thinking skills, creative writing for 3rd graders, and handwriting.

For teachers’ convenience, the teacher book contains notes and answers right in the margin, making it an excellent tool for guiding students.

The curriculum features four Literature Links that encourage students to build vocabulary, read for content, and improve 3rd grade reading comprehension. Exciting activities in these links bring stories to life and provide numerous opportunities for creative expression.

Weekly Lessons

Each of the 36 weekly lessons (including four Literature Links) are divided into easy-to-use daily plans. The following four books may be used for the Literature Links, or you may opt for other stories included in the yellow book.

  • The White Stallion by Elizabeth Shub
  • Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans
  • Meet George Washington by Joan Heilbroner
  • The Courage of Sarah Noble by Alice Dalgliesh

Integrated Language Arts Lessons

These integrated lessons cover phonics, reading, 3rd grade spelling, grammar, phonics review, and higher-order thinking skills. Focus on Spelling tips help students memorize spelling rules, and suggested 3rd grade spelling lists are included for each lesson. Handwriting instructions and work pages for cursive writing are also part of the curriculum, helping students develop penmanship.

Teacher-Friendly Design

The teacher book is designed to be user-friendly, requiring little to no preparation. It includes Phonics Facts, Grammar Guides, and Punctuation Pointers to keep students on track. Review Activities follow most lessons to provide additional skill practice, and assessments help teachers evaluate students’ progress.

Student Activity Book

The Yellow Student Activity Book (SAB) is the perfect companion for the Yellow Teacher Book. It combines student instruction, a place for writing, and a tool for easy record keeping, enabling more independent work—a significant advantage for teachers.

The SAB includes enrichment activities such as word puzzles, analogies, logic/reasoning activities, and more, which are found exclusively in the SAB. (Answers are provided in the teacher book). Please note that the Student Activity Book cannot be used independently.
