The Sign of the Beaver
 

4. a. Look at the first word in the second sentence of the literature passage. Do not confuse the words there, their, and they're. Look at how the words are used in the following sentences:

Ex: I will sit over there. (usually used as an adverb)
I will wait for their uncle. (possessive pronoun)
They're coming soon. (contraction for they are)

b. Choose the correct word in the following sentences:

1) I visited (there, their, they're) home.
2) I will go (there, their, they're) if you come with me.
3) I work (there, their, they're) tomorrow.
4) (There, Their, They're) going with us.

c. Now, write sentences using there, their, and they're correctly.

d. To alphabetize a list of words, look at the first letter of each word and put in ABC order. If the first letter is the same, look at the second letter. If the second letter is the same, look at the third letter. Continue this pattern. Alphabetize the following words.

e. Look at the copyright information below the literature passage. Remember, when writing a title of a book, underline the title and capitalize the first word and every other important word. Use italics if computer generated.

f. Think of three books you have read, or find some from your bookshelf and write the titles correctly.

g. Optional: Take an oral or written spelling pretest.

5. a. Take the first two sentences of the literature passage from dictation and edit. Check with the literature passage.
